The Ventura Film Festival was founded in 2004 and has showcased numerous films, generally exceeding 200 films per summer season, and has captured notice from the global film industry. Throughout its history, the event has grown into a significant cultural event that connects cinema creators, conservation supporters, and viewers from every corner of the planet.

Some of the highlights have been presenting celebrated filmmaker Dylan O'Neil, the initial world champion surfers Peter "PT" Townend along with Ian Cairns, four-time world champion Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/mixed martial arts fighter combat sports star Fabio Leopoldo, and the 50th Anniversary of West Side Story, which featured welcoming the full Academy Award winning cast from West Side Story, encompassing Academy Award winner/Golden Globe recipient George Chakiris together with Golden Globe honoree/Academy Award nominee Russ Tamblyn.
